about

Never meant to be a single, "Empathy" was a narrative from the original DEADLETTERS album (2003) designed to tie lyrical and musical themes from other songs together and capture the raw emotion. At nearly 6 and a half minutes, it is the longest song on the album. This re-recording from scratch, completed for the upcoming RESCINDING DEADLETTERS album (2017?), marked a milestone in the project for composer, Asche Relesser. "I felt like, from an emotional and performance standpoint, if I could just get that song and the title track done, I could probably complete the rest of the album. It really tears me up to go back to the emotional state I was in when I wrote this album. Some healing has definitely taken place. But to get the performance, I have to emotionally go back to where I was. And that has been difficult."

lyrics

"Whereas 'sympathy' can be defined as trying to see things from someone else's point of view, 'empathy' is deeper. Empathy is trying to actually feel what they feel."

---------------------------------

This is why it falls apart
This is why you walked away...

I understand now how you must have felt
With all the change...
And futility
It isn't easy
And no one said it would be
Watching you live
Without me

Welcome to my failure
Welcome to my pain

I want you to feel what I feel
I wish you could see what I've become
I wish you weren't so happy
Without me (without you)

This is why it falls apart
It's just a lack of understanding
And this means everything to me

I'm dying to find some way
To reach inside of you
And leave a mark of
Empathy

Welcome to the season
Welcome to the change
I've been longing for your -
Your understanding

This is why it falls apart
This is why you walked away
This is why it falls apart
And this means everything
No!
No, you mean everything
To me...

Everything...
Everything to me...

I understand now how you must have felt
With all the change...
And futility
It isn't easy
And no one said it would be
Watching you live
Without
Me
